Charging For Bookings: Good or Bad?

Recently I was driving and listening to the radio – which I never do as I like to be able to just listen to music, not ads and the news. I like to be in control of what I listen to. Long story short – I had a new phone and hadn’t synced my music to it yet.

Anyway as I’m driving along the news is playing and I nearly had a really bad case of road rage as I cut someone off because my brain was exploding listening to what had made the news.

Which was that restaurants are going to be doing this new thing of taking credit card details from people that wanted to book a table and if the person didn’t turn up they would charge a no show fee to the card on file.

The industry was completely fed up with the money that they were losing because of people that didn’t show up for their bookings.

It was being portrayed as this was a new concept and they weren’t sure how it was going to be received from consumers.

I say it’s about time!

Why should restaurants not be able to do that?

Why should any business that takes appointments or bookings NOT take a deposit to book or a credit card for security to charge a cancellation fee too?

There is this ridiculous thing that majority of consumers don’t understand the operating costs of a business and that the owner of the business still has to pay regardless of if the person turns up or not.

I say majority as there are some of us that completely understand as we run our own businesses and get frustrated when people disrespect our time and their booking.

It’s the same no matter what the business is.

For many industries – 100% deposit is the norm.

They do take deposits or 100% payment when you book — that’s the normal so no one questions it.

For instance, I have stayed in 100’s of hotels and I would NEVER expect to book a hotel and not have to pay for the entire booking upfront or to put down a credit card.

In fact, if these places don’t take a deposit… I get worried

If I book somewhere and they don’t take a credit card or payment, it CONCERNS me as I’m worried that I’ll turn up and they won’t have a room for me.

The hotel industry has this 100% correct.

It should be UNUSUAL to NOT take a deposit or full payment.

The restaurant industry is trying to get that control now too.

We need to do that within the Hair and Beauty industry too. We need to ALL show respect for our time by getting the clients to respect us by securing their appointment with a deposit or card as security.

If they are going to show up it shouldn’t be an issue.

The people that have issues with this is ANY industry is because they know that they might NOT actually turn up or give you any notice to cancel.

If that’s the case, that’s fine. You don’t need to have that type of client end up costing you money by not showing up.

It just infuriates me that this made the news and the way it was presented for the restaurant industry.

So lets all stand together united as business owners that rely on people booking our time or space, and start getting consumers to secure their bookings.
